The answer isn’t always “new is better”. For many storage requirements, a good-quality used container can do the job perfectly well – and at a lower cost. It really comes down to what you’re storing, where the container will be positioned and how important appearance is to you.

When Does a New Shipping Container Make Sense?
A new container – often referred to as a one-trip container – has generally completed only its initial journey from the manufacturer.
Because it has seen very little use, you can expect a cleaner appearance, minimal wear and a longer remaining lifespan.
A new shipping container may be worth considering if:
- Appearance is important
- The container will be positioned in a highly visible area
- You want the longest possible service life
- You’re storing goods that require a particularly clean environment
- You prefer minimal dents, scratches and signs of previous use
Naturally, you’ll pay more for a new container, so it’s worth considering whether those benefits are important for your particular storage requirement.
What About a Used Shipping Container?
For straightforward storage, used shipping containers can offer excellent value.
They’ve spent time in service, so some dents, scratches, faded paint or surface wear are normal. That doesn’t necessarily affect their ability to provide secure, weather-resistant storage.
The important thing is the condition and grade of the container.
A good used container should still have functioning doors, a sound structure and be wind and watertight.
For equipment, tools, stock, furniture, building materials and general business storage, a used container can often be all you need.
Understanding Container Grades
Not every used container is in the same condition.
Almar containers are available in different grades depending on age and condition.
New / One-Trip Containers
These have seen minimal use and generally offer the best appearance and longest remaining lifespan.
B-Grade Containers
These are used containers, often around 10 years or older. They will show signs of previous use but remain structurally sound, wind and watertight, making them well suited to general storage.
C-Grade Containers
These are older units with more visible wear and are better suited to applications where appearance is less important.
Understanding the grade makes it much easier to compare your options based on what you actually need rather than simply choosing between “new” and “used”.
20ft or 40ft?
Condition isn’t the only decision.
Shipping containers are commonly available in 20ft (6m) and 40ft (12m) sizes, including High Cube options where additional internal height is useful.
Before choosing, think about how much you need to store now – and whether that is likely to increase.
A 20ft container may be enough for a smaller site or business, while a 40ft container provides significantly more storage within a single unit.
Buying or Renting a Shipping Container in Namibia
There’s also no need to buy a container if your requirement is temporary.
Container rental can make more sense for projects, seasonal storage or businesses that only need additional space for a certain period.
Buying may be more suitable when you know you’ll need the container for the long term.
The right choice comes down to the duration of your requirement, budget and how you plan to use the container.
