A little preparation before your shipping container arrives can make a big difference.
Whether you’re using a container for additional business storage, equipment, stock or general storage, making sure the site is ready beforehand helps ensure the container can be positioned safely and exactly where you need it.
Choose the right location
Start by deciding where the container will be placed.
Look for an area that is firm, level and easily accessible. Avoid low-lying areas where water tends to collect and think about how you’ll use the container once it is in position.
Make sure there is enough room around the doors for them to open fully and for people to comfortably access the container.
Prepare a firm, level base
Shipping containers are strong, but they need to sit on a stable surface.
The area should be as level as possible and able to support the weight of the container, particularly once it is loaded. Depending on the site, a compacted gravel surface, concrete slab or suitable support points may be used.
Good preparation also helps keep the container level so that the doors continue to open and close properly.
Check access to the site
Before delivery, consider how easily the container can reach its final position.
Check entrance widths, gates, overhead branches, power lines and other obstacles that could restrict access. The delivery vehicle will also need sufficient space to manoeuvre and position the container.

Think about drainage
Namibia may be known for its dry climate, but drainage still matters.
Keeping the container slightly raised from the surrounding ground can help prevent water from collecting underneath it and allows airflow beneath the container.
Plan before delivery day
Once a container has been positioned and loaded, moving it becomes considerably more complicated.
Taking a few minutes to think about access, ground conditions, drainage and how you intend to use the container can save time later.
