How to Cut Your Cold Storage Energy Costs (Without Compromising Quality)

In South Africa, managing a cold chain often feels like a balancing act.  With electricity tariffs continuing to climb, the cost of keeping your products fresh can quickly weigh down your bottom line.

The good news?

You don’t need to reinvent your entire operation to see a massive difference.  By focusing on how your equipment runs and how your team interacts with it, achieving a reduction in energy costs is a very realistic goal.

Here is how to make your cold storage work harder - and smarter - for you.

1. Master the "Set Point" Strategy.

It’s a common misconception that "colder is always better."  In reality, cooling a container to -24°C when your product only requires -18°C can increase your energy consumption substantially.

The Human Touch.

Think of it like your climate control at the office. You don't need it on "arctic" to get the job done.  Check the specific requirements for your cargo - whether it’s citrus, poultry, or pharmaceuticals - and set the temperature exactly where it needs to be.  Almar reefers allow for precision control, so you can dial in that "sweet spot" with total confidence.

2. Practice "Airflow Architecture.

A refrigerated container is more than just a box;  it’s a precision-engineered environment.  If you block the floor "T-bars" or stack goods right up to the roof, the cold air can’t circulate.  This forces the motor to work overtime to reach the same temperature.

  • Don’t overfill: Aim for about 90% capacity to let the air breathe.
  • Watch the Red Line: Never stack cargo above the load line marked on the interior walls.
  • Pre-chill your goods: Loading warm products into a cold container is an energy killer. Ensure your stock is already at the target temperature before it goes in to keep the unit from spiking.

3. Mind the Doors (The 7% Rule)

Every time those heavy doors swing open, humidity rushes in and your expensive cold air rushes out.  This leads to ice build-up on the evaporator coils, triggering more frequent (and energy-heavy) defrost cycles.

Ideally, your defrost time should only account for a tiny fraction of your total refrigeration time.  If it’s creeping up, you’re likely losing too much air.  Using simple strip curtains or training staff to "grab and go" rather than leaving doors propped open can contribute significantly to that saving.

4. Maintain to Gain.

A dusty condenser coil is a hungry one.  In our local environments, coils can get grimy fast.  A simple, regular check to ensure the unit can vent heat efficiently makes a world of difference. When the machinery doesn't have to "struggle" to breathe, it draws less current and enjoys a much longer lifespan.

The Almar Advantage: Flexibility is Financial Freedom.

One of the biggest drains on a business is paying for empty space during quieter months.  This is where Almar Container Group changes the game.

We don't believe in locking you into permanent, rigid structures that cost a fortune to run year-round.  Our flexible rental options allow you to scale your cold storage up or down based on your actual demand.

  • Rent for Your Reality: Only pay for the energy and the unit when you actually have the stock to fill it.
  • No Capital Outlay: Avoid the massive upfront costs of building a permanent cold room.
