Are you a South African business needing to safely store or transport solvents, oils, diesel or alcoholic beverages in bulk? ISO Tank rental in South Africa is the easiest, safest and most environmentally friendly solution.

What is an ISO Tank?

An ISO Tank, also known as a Tank Container, ISO Tank or ISOtainer is a cylindrical-shaped container used for storing, transporting and shipping hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquids.  Made out of stainless steel with insulation and a protective layer of aluminium or polyurethane, ISO Tanks are the safest containers for sensitive products.

The cylindrical tank is built into a frame that is the same shape as a standard 20ft (6m) shipping container. This specialised bulk liquid storage container can store up to 26 000 litres of product inside it.

What can ISO Tanks store?

ISO Tanks can be used to store various types of hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquids and food-grade products:

  • All types of water
  • Any bulk liquids
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Nitric Acid
  • Mining chemicals
  • Food products
  • Solvents
  • Oils
  • Resins
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Fuels, blends, diesel
  • Waxes

What size is an ISO Tank?

ISO Tanks are the same dimensions as a standard 20ft (6m) shipping container.

Almar has five different capacity sizes in our fleet that we can rent out - 21 000; 23 000; 24 000; 25 000, and 26 000 Litre ISO Tanks. However, we focus on ISO Tanks which store between 24 000 and 26 000 Litres. There is a slight difference in the daily ISO Tank rental price of the 23 000L capacity and the bigger volume containers.

How does one lease an ISO Tank and what does it cost?

Almar has two different rate structures - the short-term rental which is less than six months, and the long-term container rental which is anything over six months. The minimum lease period is one month.

The rental rate starts at R250 + VAT per day for a lease of between three and six months. Transportation, depot handling and cleaning costs are charged separately. Long duration rentals can be discussed at enquiry stage.

Almar ISO Tanks are internationally approved, meet global safety standards, and are inspected by registered surveyors. The tanks go through a series of washes and leak detection tests after every use, and thereafter certificates are issued stating that they are clean and fit for loading the product.

It is important to note that rental prices will fluctuate from time to time and are based on the time of publishing this article (February 2024).

Sales price is dependent on age, condition and size of each tank. Each enquiry is subject to the availability of tanks at the time of enquiry.

How does an ISO Tank get transported?

ISO Tanks can be transported on trucks, trailers, ships or by rail. When transporting a full ISO Tank, it must be loaded to a minimum of 80% capacity, so that the product does not shift inside and become unstable in transit.

The ISO Tanks can be transported on a crane truck and then once at the customer’s premises the crane truck can place the Tank onto the ground.

With the ISO Tank being on lease, transportation costs to and from the location need to be taken into account. Other considerations which will affect the transportation costs are:

  • Your location in South Africa
  • The distance the ISO Tank needs to travel
  • The time it takes to deliver the container – is it via main roads or remote roads?

Almar outsources the transportation, so please have the following information available when obtaining a quote as additional costs might be incurred which we want to make you aware of upfront:

  • Are the roads roadworthy enough for the truck to gain access?
  • Are there any obstructions that could deny access?
  • Is the site prepared so that the ISO Tank can be placed correctly? The surface needs to be hard and flat, or a slabbed placement area needs to be provided.
  • Will the ISO Tank be placed in an open, unrestricted area or in a warehouse or under an awning which will require a crane to manoeuvre it?

How long does an ISO Tank last?

If well maintained and regularly serviced, an ISO Tank can have a lifespan as much as if not more than 35 years. There will be normal wear and tear maintenance required, for example, gaskets need replacing and tests need to be conducted regularly.
